Uncovering the Essentials: What Really Matters

Starting my own business was most definitely one of the hardest things I have ever done. Often people follow this up with, "...but also the most rewarding." Yeah, I'm not there yet.

I work. A lot. More than I ever have in my entire life. Forty hours a week sounds lovely right now. But thankfully, and believe me, I AM thankful, I have a supportive husband and two relatively independent girls who have provided me with the time I need to get this crazy idea off the ground.

Having worked in numerous hospitals, a private practice, and industry, certain beliefs have solidified who I am as a genetic counselor and what I am not willing to sacrifice. In addition to my younger daughter's constant cheerleading, they are the cornerstone of my business.

  1. Patient-Centered Approach: Emphasize patient education and involvement in decision-making processes regarding their genetic health. I want my patients to feel heard and supported.

  2. Continued Education and Training: Stay updated with the latest advancements in genetics and counseling techniques. This ensures that I can provide the most current and effective services.

  3. Community Engagement: Engage with the community through outreach programs, workshops, or educational seminars to raise awareness about the importance of genetic health and available resources. Besides, it allows me the chance to dork out about genetics with new people.

  4. Ethical and Inclusive Practices: Uphold ethical standards and ensure inclusivity and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs while providing genetic counseling services. Genetics affects every single one of us - we should all be included in that discussion.

  5. Advocacy and Support Networks: Advocate for policies that promote access to genetic counseling services and support networks for patients and families affected by genetic conditions.
